SPOTLIGHT: Jolene Pool, Salvocorp Sales Director
As we celebrate Women's Month, it’s crucial to shine a spotlight on the incredible women who are breaking barriers and making significant contributions to the built environment.
In an industry traditionally dominated by men, these women have not only persevered but have also thrived, bringing fresh perspectives, innovative solutions, and a relentless drive for excellence.
Today, we are privileged to share insights from a seasoned professional who has spent over two decades in the construction industry, Jolene Pool. Her journey is a testament to the resilience, passion, and dedication that women bring to the field.
From working on large-scale infrastructure projects that have transformed communities to mentoring the next generation of talent, Jolene's story is one of inspiration and impact.
" Knowing that your work helps provide essential services and improves people’s quality of life adds a deep sense of purpose to your efforts "
Through this interview, we delve into her experiences, achievements, and the challenges she has faced, as well as her vision for the future of women in construction. This conversation serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of recognising and supporting the contributions of women, not just during Women's Month, but every day.
Can you share your journey into the construction industry and what inspired you to pursue a career in this field?
My journey into the construction industry began in 2001, when I joined one of Africa's largest manufacturers of wood-based panel products. I received excellent guidance from mentors there, this, alongside the passion and commitment my colleagues held towards the products they manufactured, I developed a strong foundation and a deep love for this industry.
Being in the construction industry for over two decades has provided me with a wealth of experience and insight. The opportunity to learn continuously, work with diverse and talented individuals, and see the results of our efforts manifest in real-world projects is truly rewarding.
What have been some of your most significant achievements or projects that you are particularly proud of in your career?
There is an endless list of memorable projects, but particularly close to my heart is my involvement in large infrastructure developments such as health care facilities. These projects not only contribute to the physical landscape but also have a lasting impact on community well-being. Knowing that your work helps provide essential services and improves people’s quality of life adds a deep sense of purpose to your efforts.
Beyond this, mentoring and leading teams effectively, helps to develop talent within the industry. Creating a positive and productive work environment can be one of the most rewarding aspects of a career, and much like the mentorship I received, being an effective leader, and mentor can shape the next generation of professionals, ensuring the continued growth and success of the field
What unique challenges have you faced as a woman in the construction industry, and how have you overcome them?
Taking on projects with significant obstacles, such as tight deadlines and complex logistics, requires problem-solving skills and resilience. These challenges often push the boundaries of what’s possible and finding solutions under pressure, and that is exactly what I love about this industry.
" No project is the same, and they all come with their own challenges "
How do you see the role of women evolving in the construction industry, and what changes would you like to see to support more women in this field?
The role of women in the construction industry has been evolving positively over the years, but there is still significant room for progress. There is a growing number of women entering various roles within the construction industry, from architecture & design, project management & engineering to skilled trades and executive positions.
This increased representation helps challenge stereotypes and broadens the industries appeal. Providing targeted training and development opportunities for women can help them advance in their careers, this includes leadership training, skills development, and career coaching.
What advice would you give to young women who are considering a career in construction or other traditionally male-dominated industries
If you’re passionate about construction or another field, pursue it wholeheartedly. Your enthusiasm and dedication will drive your success.
Learn as much as you can about the industry through education, research, and hands-on experience. Understanding the field will help you make informed decisions and build confidence.
Join industry groups and attend networking events. Building relationships with experienced professionals can provide guidance, support, and opportunities.
Look for mentors who can offer advice, share their experiences, and help you navigate challenges. Confidence in your abilities is crucial. Recognise your skills and strengths and don’t be afraid to advocate for yourself.
" View challenges as opportunities for growth. Reflect on your experiences and use them to improve and advance in your career "
As we conclude this insightful conversation, it becomes evident that the contributions of women in the construction industry are not only valuable but essential to its continued growth and evolution.
The experiences and achievements shared in this interview highlight the importance of perseverance, leadership, and the unwavering commitment to making a difference. As we celebrate Women's Month, let us carry forward the inspiration drawn from these stories and work collectively to create an environment where every woman in the industry is empowered to reach her full potential.
