SPOTLIGHT: Jeanine Panizzolo, Geberit Specifications Consultant
Embarking on a career in the construction industry is often a journey marked by unexpected twists and rewarding challenges.
In this interview, we delve into the inspiring story of a woman who transitioned from customer service to become a Specifications Consultant at Geberit.
" Embrace your passion and confidence; your unique perspective and skills are incredibly valuable, and the industry benefits from diverse viewpoints "
Jeanine demonstrates how passion, dedication, and a commitment to quality can shape a fulfilling career in construction.
Can you share your journey into the construction industry and what inspired you to pursue a career in this field?
My journey into the construction industry has been both unique and fulfilling. Initially, I worked in customer service at high-end health spas, where providing exceptional service was crucial. This experience honed my skills in client relations and understanding the importance of quality and attention to detail.
From there, I transitioned into marketing, starting with roles that involved working with students and later, promoting various building industry products. It was during this time that I discovered my passion for the construction sector. I was fascinated by how the industry blends technical precision with creative solutions.
Among the many companies I encountered, Geberit stood out as a true leader in innovation and quality. This drew me to focus on a single company where I could deeply engage with the products and make a significant impact. My role as a Specifications Consultant at Geberit allows me to leverage my background in customer service and marketing, and it’s been incredibly rewarding to contribute to such a forward-thinking organisation.
What have been some of your most significant achievements or projects that you are particularly proud of in your career?
In my career, what I find most fulfilling is the impact I have on every project, regardless of its size or scope. Each project, whether it’s a high-end commercial development or a more modest residential build, is significant to me. My role as a specifications consultant involves selecting solutions that are not only practical and reliable but also enhance user comfort and functionality.
I take pride in ensuring that every solution I specify contributes positively to the end-user’s experience. Whether it’s a complex, large-scale project or a smaller, straightforward one, I approach each with the same level of dedication. Knowing that my work helps to create user-friendly and comfortable environments is what makes every project meaningful to me. The ability to make a tangible difference in people’s lives through thoughtful and effective solutions is the most rewarding aspect of my job.
So, next time you spot the Geberit logo in a restroom/bathroom around Cape Town, know that while I might not have physically built them, I’m proud to have had a hand in making things just a bit more fabulous 😉
What unique challenges have you faced as a woman in the construction industry, and how have you overcome them?
As a woman in the construction industry, I’ve certainly encountered my share of challenges, particularly in the more male-dominated environments like construction sites. There have been moments when my contributions were overlooked or when I faced skepticism simply because of my gender.
However, my approach has always been to focus on delivering value and solutions. By concentrating on providing practical, user-friendly solutions and demonstrating my expertise, I’ve been able to earn respect and build strong relationships. On site, it’s not uncommon to face initial resistance, but once you prove that you have the answers and can solve problems effectively, perceptions tend to shift.
Interestingly, my work with Architects and Interior Designers, where the gender split is more balanced, has been incredibly supportive and collaborative. This experience has reinforced my belief that professionalism and expertise transcend gender, and it has been rewarding to work in such an inclusive and creative environment.
Ultimately, my goal has always been to contribute meaningfully to every project, and overcoming these challenges has only strengthened my commitment to excellence in the industry.

How do you see the role of women evolving in the construction industry, and what changes would you like to see to support more women in this field?
The role of women in the construction industry has been evolving positively, with more women stepping into various roles and making significant contributions. As the industry increasingly recognises the value of diverse perspectives, women are playing key roles in shaping innovative solutions and driving progress. This shift is not only enriching the industry but also helping to challenge and change outdated stereotypes.
Looking forward, I believe that further progress can be made by continuing to support and encourage women at all stages of their careers. Initiatives such as mentorship programs, targeted recruitment efforts, and professional development opportunities can make a significant difference. Providing a platform for women to showcase their talents and achievements can inspire the next generation to pursue and thrive in construction careers.
Moreover, fostering a more inclusive and supportive work environment is crucial. This includes addressing biases and ensuring that women have equal opportunities for advancement and leadership roles. By championing these changes, we can build a construction industry that not only welcomes diverse talents but also leverages them to drive innovation and excellence.
