SPOTLIGHT: Wendy Mitrovich, Brand Manager, Polyflor
In celebration of Women’s Day and Month, we spotlight a remarkable woman whose journey from marketing to the heart of the construction industry is nothing short of inspiring.
" The opportunity to drive change and achieve results has been immensely fulfilling "
Her career began in a small PR agency, evolved through impactful roles at ESP Africa and Penquin, and has flourished at Polyflor. Her story is a powerful testament to perseverance, passion, and the drive to excel in the Built Environment.
Can you share your journey into the construction industry and what inspired you to pursue a career in this field?
Throughout my career, I’ve consistently found myself drawn to the construction industry. My journey began at LiB Marketing, a small PR agency, where my first role after completing my studies led to a decade-long career with ESP Africa (Pty) Ltd. This company, which supplies replacement parts to the heavy earthmoving machinery sector, definitely sparked my passion for the industry.
After 10 years, I transitioned to Penquin, an advertising and marketing agency very close to my heart, where I spent another 11 years consulting for various players in the construction field. Joining Polyflor in 2016 felt like a natural progression.
What have been some of your most significant achievements or projects that you are particularly proud of in your career?
I’m so grateful to look back on my career and identify numerous significant achievements where I’ve made a difference.
Leading large exhibitions at ElectraMining and Bauma Africa, managing conferences and events, spearheading corporate identity rebrands, and overseeing impactful product launches were each so memorable.
In their own way, these wins all contributed to my personal growth and impacted the industry and the people I’ve worked with. My husband and I were fortunate to build three homes, which further fuelled my passion. This experience was incredibly rewarding and taught me life lessons and skills I never imagined I could possess. The opportunity to drive change and achieve results has been immensely fulfilling.
What unique challenges have you faced as a woman in the construction industry, and how have you overcome them?
I haven't encountered any unique challenges specifically because I am a woman in the construction industry.
Instead, I believe that trust, reputation and respect are earned regardless of gender. My focus has always been on expanding my expertise, building strong relationships based on mutual respect, and consistently delivering results. These principles have allowed me to succeed.
" Determination, persistence, professionalism, and a genuine passion for the business have been the driving forces behind my journey "
How do you see the role of women evolving in the construction industry, and what changes would you like to see to support more women in this field?
The role of women in the construction industry is evolving, with more women stepping into leadership roles and offering valuable perspectives in traditionally male-dominated areas. Women naturally bring a softer touch to the workplace, with qualities such as empathy, collaboration, and intuition contributing to a more balanced and insightful approach.
I’d love to see more women empowered to show up fully in their roles, confident in the unique strengths they bring to the table.
What advice would you give to young women who are considering a career in construction or other traditionally male-dominated industries
Instead of focusing on proving yourself against your male counterparts or fostering an 'us vs. them' mentality, it's more important to be true to yourself.
Work hard, lead by example, prioritise empathy and emotional intelligence in your interactions. By embracing these qualities, you'll naturally earn respect and make a meaningful impact in the industry."
" Clear communication and confidence are key "
Wendy's journey illustrates that success in the construction industry is built on more than just expertise—it's about integrity, resilience, and a genuine commitment to making a difference.
As women continue to break barriers and rise to leadership roles, her advice emphasises the importance of authenticity, hard work, and empathy. Her path serves as a beacon for young women aiming to forge their own paths in construction and beyond.
