Sometimes, the best career paths are the ones we never planned for. In 2016, a seasoned Product Manager with a background in electronics and appliances found herself stepping into the built environment industry at Hansgrohe.

" women often bring a different perspective and skill set that can be advantageous to companies "

What began as an unexpected opportunity has transformed into an eight-year journey of continuous learning, growth, and remarkable achievements. Her story is a testament to the power of adaptability, perseverance, and the willingness to embrace new challenges.

Can you share your journey into the construction industry and what inspired you to pursue a career in this field?

I did not set out to pursue a career in the construction industry. I had worked as a Product Manager for various multinational corporations, and in 2016 I was approached by a former colleague to interview at Hansgrohe to apply some of the techniques we had been trained in, in the electronics and appliance industries.

Fast forward eight years and I am still learning something new in this industry every day.

What have been some of your most significant achievements or projects that you are particularly proud of in your career?

I am particularly proud of completing my PhD in Marketing Management in 2018 whilst working full-time in a demanding job, and subsequently having seven articles published in international marketing and business journals.

I am also proud of all the projects we undertake at Hansgrohe to improve effeciencies, no matter how small. It is always satisfactory when you see improvements after the effort you have put in.

What unique challenges have you faced as a woman in the construction industry, and how have you overcome them?

We all face challenges whether they come from customers, suppliers or colleagues, regardless of gender. However looking back one challenge I had to overcome was the mental challenge of returning from maternity leave, and being told that I could potentially lose a portion of my managerial responsibilities due to being perceived unapproachable.

I made a 360 shift to win back the confidence of my team, and subsequently adding many more team members who

" I aim to continuously grow and mentor into their future roles "

How do you see the role of women evolving in the construction industry, and what changes would you like to see to support more women in this field?

It’s a hard one because I am not a feminist who believes that every single role in the construction industry should necessarily be filled by women.

I do think that women often bring a different perspective and skill set that can be advantageous to companies, especially in analytical and managerial roles. The changes that I would like to see is to have women taking more ownership of their own goals and drive their predevelopment.

What advice would you give to young women who are considering a career in construction or other traditionally male-dominated industries

Put in extra effort early in your career while you are young with relatively few personal commitments.

Work the overtime to learn something new or find a way to do something faster.

And never, ever stop investing in your education

" you are the best brand name you will ever be CEO of "

The construction industry may not have been her original destination, but it has certainly become a place where she thrives. From completing a PhD while working full-time to mentoring a growing team, her journey is a powerful reminder that success is not just about following a predetermined path, but about making the most of every opportunity.

For women entering male-dominated fields like construction, her advice is clear: work hard, invest in your education, and always take charge of your own professional growth.
